International tendencies are favorable to Ukrainian farmers, Yushchenko says

The latest tendencies observed in the world agrarian markets can help Ukrainian peasants make a good progress and become competitive the world over, President Viktor Yushchenko said during his visit to the Agro-2008 international fair exhibition.

"As regards plant growing, we have a chance to greatly boost profitability of each crop, and take the leading roles," the head of state said.

Yushchenko emphasized that agriculture must become Ukraine's most promising branch. "Last year we for the first time obtained grain price rise higher than the rate of growth in the prices of oil and gas," the President said.

In his words, the world is surviving unique tendencies, when 700 million people in this planet are facing the problem of shortage of food. In the past year alone, the summary rise in the prices of farm produce made 40%, and may even reach 100% under expert estimates, the President noted.

At the same time, Viktor Yushchenko spoke about the perspectives of drawing serious investments into Ukrainian agriculture, expressing the need for liberalization of the domestic agricultural market. "If we hold liberalization, we will have the world's best developed agriculture," the head of state says.
